Radical: Tides Foundation
Founder: Drummond Pike
Chair of Directors: Wade Rathke
Board Member: Chip Berlet
Before founding the Tides Foundation, Drummond Pike was an associate director of theYouth Project (YP) organized by the Center for Community Change. The group was designed to spearhead left wing campaigns. Center for Community Change is a Alinksy style organization much like ACORN.
Board Member Chip Berlet was an organizer and founding member of the pro-Stalinist organization Friends of Albania. Chip claims to be a watchdog who monitors the so called “facists” on the “right wing”. He was also a former Vice President of the Communist group National Lawyers Guild. Chip Berlet also serves on the Advisory Board of the National Committee Against Repressive Legislation which was formed in the 60’s in retaliation of the anti-Communist movement.
The Tides Foundation and Tides Center were designed by Drummond Pike as a filter for major contributors to fund radical left wing efforts. Through a legal loop hole, non-profits can use Tides to in effect “launder” its contributions and funnels them back to their own for-profit organizations. For example, as reported by Gretchen Randall and Tom Randall of the Capital Research Center, The Pew Charitable Trust funnels money through Tides to for-profit media groups:
“Tides also earns revenue from three for-profit journalism “projects” set up by
the Pew Charitable Trusts in 1995 and 1996. The Pew Trusts are one of the largest U.S.
foundations, with assets of $4.3 billion in 2001. Because a private foundation cannot
give money directly to a for-profit media group, Pew has used Tides as a conduit to
fund the Pew Center for Excellence in Journalism, the Pew Center for Civic Journalism,
and the Pew Center for the People and the Press.”
Some of the efforts that Tides supports:
radical environmentalism
the anti-war movement
anti-free trade campaigns
the banning of firearms ownership
abolition of the death penalty
access to government-funded abortion-on-demand
radical gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender advocacy
